Permaculture and BioChar
Our eyes have been opened by attending a Permaculture Design Course in the UK, our lifestyle in the UK now seemed so materialistic, so wasteful.
Permaculture is a worldwide network of people working to demonstrate and spread the ideas of sustainable living. It is a process of providing for people’s needs, within the ecological limits of our environment. The three main principles are,
1) Care for the Earth
2) Care for the People
3) Set limits to consumption and reproduction, and redistribute surplus.
One of the many things that we learnt from our course was about the importance of composting, mulching, looking after the soil, and, BioChar.
is an ancient technology, rediscovered in the Amazon rainforest, also known as Terra Preta, black earth.
We are creating this on our farm as a soil additive to improve the fertility of our soil, BioChar is a stable solid, rich in carbon, and can endure in soil for thousands of years.
The International BioChar Initative, and The Permaculture Research Institute are conducting investigations using BioChar as an approach to carbon sequestration, as it has the potential to help mitigate climate change. Some independent studies published on the Internet have shown a 300% plant growth increase.
We are in talks with Coimbra University for them to carry out scientific research on our farm in to the benefits of this product.
